The most recent events in the media, namely the shooting in Aurora, CO, has brought much to light as far as how we handle trauma and tragedy on a national level.
The day after the horrific shootings, a local news station contacted me for comments. The news crew came and interviewed me about the potential pathology of the shooter, what victims should expect and so on. However, as the young reporter and I continued to chat after the interview, I had a revelation. I realized that no matter what line of questioning she took, she tried to keep the focus on the horror of the shooting itself while I continuously tried to focus on how this could bring communities closer together for the common good.
This battle represents a simple dilemma; while it is extremely important to report national events, it is also important to focus on what good could come out of it along with how to prevent it in the future. Just a thought….
