Understanding The Need for Adolescent and Children’s Psychiatry
As a caring guardian, you truly want the best for the children in your life during every phase of growing. Unfortunately, life does not always provide ideal circumstances to make the best happen from birth to adulthood. Some kids experience trauma – whether as a result of a traumatic incident that happens to the child or via witnessing a traumatic event happen to a friend, family member, or caregiver. Other children have mental health disorders as the result of a chemical imbalance or other clinical diagnosis.
At Sage Neuroscience Center, we recognize that every child or adolescent is unique – just like every child and adolescent experiences trauma or mental health disorders differently. Because of this, the overall treatment program needs to be customized to meet the needs of each individual to achieve the best possible chances to get better. Whether that customized treatment plan includes medication management for teens, child counseling, or both, the use of a fully-staffed multidisciplinary team (MDT) in combination with parent and family support truly provides the best outcome for your child.
“There’s nothing more important in this world than caring for a child.”
– Seth Adam Smith
Psychiatric Services at Sage Neuroscience Center
Your child’s customized treatment plan will include input from multiple sources as a part of an MDT. Our children’s psychiatry services utilize experienced, trained child psychiatrists, certified nurse practitioners and other medical personnel, and psychotherapists trained in child psychopathology. Together with parent and family input, and even school personnel, we build an integrated team to help provide the most customized care possible.
The process begins with a thorough psychiatric evaluation. These evaluations are designed to figure out the aspects of trauma or mental health disorders that are affecting your child. With identification and isolation of the particular psychological, social, and biological components that may be contributing to your child’s struggles, we are able to build and implement the most comprehensive care plan necessary. An effective treatment plan often involves therapies and techniques like play therapy, sand tray therapy, counseling, and medication therapy.
Psychiatric Evaluations for Children and Adolescents
When your child or teen is struggling with the effects of trauma or a mental health disorder, it is important to build a full picture of all the problems involved to inform treatment. This process is known as a psychiatric evaluation. A comprehensive psychiatric evaluation can help our practitioners identify the unique causes at the root of a mental health disorder, as well as the symptoms they may lead to. The result is a full picture of the patient’s needs. It can illuminate potential pathways to recovery and guide treatments used in the future.
Here at Sage Neuroscience Center, your child’s psychiatric evaluation will be completed by a licensed child psychiatrist or certified psychiatric nurse practitioner. Through psychiatric evaluation, we can learn more about:
Your child’s functioning and needs
The symptoms your child is experiencing
The severity of those symptoms
Any co-occurring mental health conditions (i.e., depression, anxiety, obsessive compulsive disorder)
Other contributing factors
Conditions We Treat
Once your child has completed a full psychiatric evaluation which has provided a diagnosis and identified the core factors contributing to his or her mental health condition, we can build a customized treatment plan that addresses each of these.
Common child psychiatric conditions we treat include:
Trauma and its related effects
Impulse control and thought control disorders
Anger and aggression
Oppositional defiant disorder
Tourette’s Syndrome and other tic disorders
Suicidal ideation and self-harm
In addition, some genetic, metabolic, and medical disorders may cause psychiatric symptoms to emerge. With an accurate diagnosis, our multidisciplinary team can treat the psychiatric component of these disorders.
Ongoing Child and Adolescent Psychotherapy
Sage Neuroscience Center’s intensive outpatient programs (IOPs) for adolescents may use a wide variety of approaches to child psychotherapy in a group setting. Therapies like sand table therapy can help your child learn to communicate stressful components without experiencing emotional distress. Meanwhile, play therapy can help your child develop their own problem-solving skills, learn to communicate when they’re having problems, and attempt to change their behaviors moving forward.
Throughout our teen therapy group, ABHIOP facilitators utilize supportive counseling to help your teen to identify their own sources of psychological distress, isolate the sources of problems, and work towards dealing with both. Then, with the participation of families, schools, and other sources of guidance, we work to extend these problem-solving techniques to the home and other environments. In many instances, our counselors work closely with you, your child, and the other members of our staff to determine additional therapies that may help them.
Medication Management for Teens and Children
It is so important to reiterate that every child is different. The way each child’s unique set of mental health conditions and symptoms will not only present differently but they will respond to treatment differently. In that respect, while not all children and adolescents will benefit from prescription medication, many of the mental health conditions we treat here at Sage Neuroscience Center are typically best treated with medications as part of a comprehensive treatment plan. However, unlike medications for physical conditions, medications for mental health conditions require continuous adjustment and management. Kids will change and the way they experience mental illness might change too.
If your child could benefit from the use of prescription medication to treat a mental health disorder, the initial prescription will likely be based on dosages that typically work well for others with symptoms similar to your child’s. The medication prescriber will work closely with your child’s counselor to actively keep an eye on your child’s response to the medication. As therapy continues, ongoing medication management will ensure the medication effectively treats your child’s symptoms while minimizing any negative side effects.
